Record WhatsApp calls on Mac — voice and video
Capture any WhatsApp call on your Mac — voice or video — into a single audio file, then transcribe it locally. Works with the WhatsApp desktop app and WhatsApp Web. No notification on the other end.
How it works with WhatsApp
- 1
Start the WhatsApp call
WhatsApp desktop app or web.whatsapp.com — both work. Voice or video.
- 2
Press ⌘R in CallCove
CallCove captures WhatsApp's system audio plus your mic. A red dot in the menubar confirms recording is live.
- 3
Stop, get a mixed file, transcribe
Both sides land in a single .m4a in ~/Recordings/CallCove/. Click Transcribe Last Recording to run Whisper locally on your Apple Neural Engine.
Why CallCove for WhatsApp
WhatsApp has no built-in recording on Mac, and the desktop app's audio doesn't pass through QuickTime. CallCove sits in your menubar, grabs WhatsApp's audio plus your mic, and gives you a finished .m4a the moment you stop.
- Works on WhatsApp voice and WhatsApp video calls
- Compatible with WhatsApp desktop app and WhatsApp Web
- Captures both sides — their voice + your mic — into one mixed track
- No notification or banner shown to the other person
- Group call audio captured as a single mixed track
- Local transcription works in WhatsApp's most common languages
WhatsApp — Q&A
Can I record a WhatsApp call on Mac?+
Yes. CallCove records the audio WhatsApp plays through your Mac's speakers plus your microphone, mixed into one .m4a. macOS' own screen recorder doesn't capture WhatsApp's system audio without a virtual audio device — CallCove uses Apple's native ScreenCaptureKit and doesn't need one.
Does WhatsApp notify the other person that I'm recording?+
No. CallCove records at the OS level — WhatsApp has no way to detect it. Recording-consent law still applies; in two-party-consent regions you must inform everyone on the call.
Voice calls and video calls — both?+
Both. The audio capture works identically for WhatsApp voice and WhatsApp video. CallCove records audio only — the video isn't saved.
Does it work with WhatsApp Web (browser)?+
Yes. WhatsApp Web in Safari, Chrome, Firefox, or Edge plays audio through your Mac's speakers, which is exactly what CallCove captures.
Can I record a WhatsApp call from my phone if it's mirrored to Mac?+
If the call audio is routed through your Mac (e.g. AirPods paired to your Mac while on a phone call, or Continuity Audio), yes. If the audio plays only on your iPhone or Android device, no — CallCove captures only Mac-side audio.
Can I record group WhatsApp calls?+
Yes. Whatever WhatsApp mixes and plays for you is captured. Per-participant tracks are not produced; you get one mixed track plus your mic.
